The bamboo river shepherds of Longai

(Jayanta Dey/Reuters)

In India, on the Longai river, near Kanmun village, in the remote northeastern state of Mizoram, bamboo logs are transported down the river tied in a sort of rafts. These rafts are stacked in order to form long serpents to make the transport along the river easier, conducted by men which walking on these serpents manage them with the help of long perchs like shepherds with a flock of sheep.
