The Bell Tower of the sunken church risks to crumble down
©Photograph by Guido Trombetta
In Val Venosta, an Italian wonderful Valley very close to Austria and Switzerland there is a Bell Tower which has become the subject of many postcards: The church tower of Lake Resia. The peculiarity is that this 14th-century "campanile" stands in the middle of a lake and the church is totally sunken and so is the old village that was around.
In 1940 it was decided to build a dam and, despite the strong protest of the villagers the whole hamlet (163 houses)were submerged. Only the bell tower remained visible and nowadays has become a tourist attraction and a symbol for the whole valley.
The bad news is that yesterday some cracks have been spotted and the engineers are worried that the Campanile could crumble down in the lake pretty soon. Let's hope someone will do something to save it and that the requirements of the people of Curon Valvenosta would not be forgotten again.
